One of the most exciting positive impacts Crystal Bridges will have is on children. Watching your child experience art for the first time is a truly remarkable moment. Placing sculpture outdoors allows relationships to build between the object and the child or adult. It gives more access for visits, but it also gives the sculpture a home, somewhere it will be for a long, long time. Giving sculpture a place in the community also adds to the definition of that community’s sense of place. This summer, Crystal Bridges welcomed Amy Allen (pictured below on the right) to the staff as our first library intern. This six-week long internship marked the completion of Amy’s Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. When Crystal Bridges opens it will house an extensive art library which will be a wonderful resource for this area and for scholars from all over the country. On Tuesday, July 8th, 2008, the staff of Crystal Bridges visited the construction site to observe progress. It was an ideal day – warm and breezy – to see the building outline taking shape. Donning hard hats and stylish yellow vests, we learned, first-hand, from our tour guides, Don Adams and Jim Wickerham, of Linbeck-Nabholtz Joint Venture, about the technology being used in preparing the foundation. We actually got to walk in what will be the waterway flowing under the two Crystal Bridges. This photo was taken at the area that will serve as the main entrance.
